Standing in the middle of a landfill, surrounded by garbage..join me!
Environmental science is a big deal and overfilling our landfills is a big issue for taxpayers and environmentalists. So, we took our 360 all-around, up and down, camera to a landfill to better understand the topic (my nostrils may never be the same).
VictoryXR has taken its cameras all around the world so students can travel without leaving their seat. And these are the 2D videos we grew up on. These are 360 meaning you can look all around, even behind you and see everything in the location. You look up and see the same birds flying that we did and look down to see the ground we stood on. It is immersive and true and feels more real than anything else in the entertainment industry.
Here are a few locations our cameras have visited:
– Praque for the history lesson on Vaclav Havel and the Velvet Revolution
– Hong Kong for a science lesson on engineering and skyscrapers
– Roswell, New Mexico to investigate UAVs (UFOs)
– Beijing to visit the Great Wall of China
– Hiroshima and Pearl Harbor to understand World War II
– Greece to visit the ‘Grand Canyon’ of Europe
– An Iowa Dairy Farm to learn about genetics
– Memphis, Tennessee for the last segment on the life of Martin Luther King
– The rainforests of Mexico to learn about natural ecosystems
– Egypt for The Valley of the Kings, Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple
– And, of course, a landfill, a garbage dump, a big pile of trash.
When we shoot a global field trip, we have a few goals:
1) Keep it short, ideally around 10 minutes
2) Always have a human teaching and drawing attention to specific environments
3) Focus primarily on science (with Wendy Martin) and history (with Steve Grubbs)
4) Embed graphics, images and even 2D videos into the 360 VR field trip to bring it to life even more
5) Allow users access to these field trips through a VR headset, a Chrome/Safari browser or a personal computer

BOTTOM LINE: Very few students (let alone adults) will travel the globe. Field trips are expensive and time consuming. VXR Global Traveler opens up the option of traveling the world and learning on those trips, while never leaving home. My father was a social studies and history teacher at a public middle school in Iowa. He valued the growth students experience when they are exposed to other cultures.
I am carrying on this piece of the family legacy by recording global field trips and letting students see what the world really looks like – and perhaps, broadening their horizons just a little.
