VictoryVR to Roll Out First Oculus-based Virtual Reality Science Curriculum Tuesday

Davenport, Iowa—Students at Buffalo Elementary School, in Buffalo, Iowa will be the first students to study from an Oculus Rift-based science curriculum immersed in virtual reality.

The curriculum, developed by VictoryXR, relies on the NextGEN national science standards to develop a series of virtual learning modules for each section. In addition to virtual field trips, science experiments with an elite national teacher and private movies in a virtual home theater, students also take a 10-question assessment controlled by the student’s eyes within the VR environment.

Chad Pregracke, CNN’s International Hero of the Year, takes students on a virtual field trip to his garbage barge as he cleans up the Ohio River near Louisville, Kentucky. This virtual field trip is one of the modules in the Water Cycle learning unit. While learning about evaporation, precipitation and condensation, students also learn how our nation’s rivers are integral to our well-being as they leave their classroom and stand on a barge with river-activist Pregracke.

Members of the media are invited to attend a formal unveiling of this technology at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at Buffalo Elementary School, 1000 Jefferson St., Buffalo, Iowa.

The new technology for Buffalo Elementary School was funded by a grant from the Bechtel Trust. It includes three Oculus VR sets and a five-year license to the VictoryXR School Curriculum Library.

VictoryXR has worked with the Davenport Community Schools Curriculum Department and the Buffalo Elementary School principal in their production of the science curriculum pieces which include an experiential piece on the water cycle, an environmental science piece using a tour of the Nahant Marsh, and a barge trip with Chad Pregracke and his crew which was filmed on site in Ohio specifically for the school.

“Letting students immerse themselves in science and technology learning through virtual reality is one of the promising uses of this new technology,” said Steve Grubbs, CEO of VictoryXR. “Not only does it block out distraction, but it creates a 10x improvement over most existing forms of learning.”

VictoryXR is licensing a library of science curriculum content to schools across the United States for the 2017-18 school year. Some of the curriculum is free and open to the public, while other parts of the curriculum are available only to those who license it.
